Missouri Girls HS basketball Play-off predictions

Here are my Missouri Girls HS basketball state play off predictions for classes one through five.  I see a lot of familiar school names popping up for both boys and girls.  Certain schools seem to have strong programs in both boys and girls and a good player pool to elevate their game.

Here are my class picks.  I will revisit classes four and five as the play-offs evolve.


Class One
South Iron over South Nodaway (Platte Valley) 19
Community over Walnut Grove 20

South Iron wins state over Community 3
Comments:  South Iron boys suffered a devastating loss to Dora but the Lady Panthers move through and win a close one with Community, a top poll pick by the MBCA poll.
Class Two
East Buchanan over Oran 2
Blue Eye over Tipton 11
East Buchanan wins state over Blue Eye 5
Comments: The East Buchanan-Oran contest could be the most tightly contested and the that winner will probably win out. Don't count Oran out.
Class Three
Licking over Macon 3
Whitfield over Strafford 13
Whitfield wins state over Licking 14
Comments: Whitfield is the class of class four.  Licking wins a close one with Macon but can't overcome Whitfield's size and speed.
Class Four
Cape ND over Park Hills Central 16
Rockwood Summit over Gateway STEM 4
Nevada over Grain Valley 7
Kearney over Lincoln College Prep 10
Ladue over Vashon 21
Incarnate Word over Warrenton 29
Sullivan over Helias 11
West Plains over Carl Junction 3
Long Range Prediction
Incarnate Word wins state over Cape Notre Dame 3
Comments: Incarnate Word is lights out, but will be challenged by a talented Cape Girardeau Notre Dame squad.
Class Five
Poplar Bluff over Cor Jesu Academy 3
Kirkwood over Marquette 8
Lee's Summit West over Blue Springs 8
Liberty KC over St. Joes Central 8
Hazelwood Central over Parkway Central 2
Ft. Zumwalt West over Troy 5
Rock Bridge over Ozark 8
Kickapoo over Republic 1
Long Range Prediction
Rockbridge wins state over Lee's Summit West 3
Comments: Class Five has a lot of talent but Rockbridge ekes out a win over Lee's Summit West in the final.

Facts of life part 2 and looking at the MBCA Girls Poll

One reader asked me how I started the ratings model of girl's high school, so I thought I would go through the process.  Along with that explanation, I put ratings to the Girl's Missouri Basketball Coaches Association poll. You have to start somewhere, so I started with Kirkwood girls and gave them a 120 rating.  I rated all of their opponents (up or down depending on the outcome vs Kirkwood).  I focused on class 5, 4 and 3 teams initially and then found a few St. Louis area class one and two. Once I had them rated, I compared their opponents to add additional teams to the model.  That process allowed me to get most of the teams in St. Louis area rated (to varying degrees) and then I had to find teams from other parts of the state that had played St. Louis teams.  Once I had a few teams in Kansas City and Springfield and Bootheel, I could start to rate outstate teams. Missouri Class 5 Girls HS basketball ratings 4/03/2020

I have been pouring over my class five girls ratings and looking at their performances vs competition along with the Missouri Girls Coaches polls https://mosports.rivals.com/news/2019-2020-girls-pre-season-basketball-poll-release-11-26- Final class five Coaches Poll Here's where I think the final girls ratings should be: I am not giving out any ties for first, like the MBCA polls did. Rock Bridge was the cream of the crop for Missouri girls basketball but there were many excellent teams playing.  The MBCA ratings reflect the final four teams in the state play-offs, whereas my ratings cover the entire season, so a team like Liberty KC, who were 27-1 and lost to Blue Springs in districts were rewarded for their excellent season with a #2 rating.  Kirkwood, who was in the final four, also had a great season but there were other west teams that ranked above them, or so the algorithm indicated. While St. Joes Central was only 16-12, three of those losses were to Liberty...

Combined Girls and Boys Missouri HS basketball ratings - 4/08/2020

What school has the best overall basketball program in Missouri for boys and girls? Drum roll please...…. It is: Rock Bridge Rock Bridge is followed closely by Hazelwood Central, Liberty KC and, surprisingly, Cape Notre Dame.  Staley, Ozark, Ladue, Vashon, Kickapoo and Webster Groves round out  the top ten.  These programs are the same ones that produce outstanding teams year in and year out.  If you want to find out why they are so successful, you should talk to their athletic directors.  I will bet you that they have sound feeder programs that are fully aligned with the high school.
